Moments like those have made me realize just how important it is to acknowledge my social, emotional needs and reflect on how important self-care tips for mental health truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are always aware of our basic needs, such as the need for food and water, but the human experience is much more complex than that. There are countless necessities we often neglect, and one of those is taking care of ourselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before taking a deep dive into what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snhu.edu\/about-us\/newsroom\/health\/what-is-self-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-care<\/a> was and what it entailed, I never thought it would become something essential to my well-being. I had a vague understanding of it but when it came to making it an integral part of my life, I didn\u2019t know where to start. Self-care can be understood as a holistic approach to taking care of your mind and emotions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s taking your attention away from the external world and looking internally. It\u2019s being vulnerable with yourself and acknowledging your needs. It\u2019s asking yourself questions like &#8220;<em>What can I do to improve?<\/em>&#8220;<em> <\/em>and<em> &#8220;How can I become a happier person?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-care tips for mental health targets many aspects of your well-being such as your emotional, physical, social, and mental health. Some examples of self-care are eating healthier, exercising, getting more sleep, and meditating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike many other forms of mental help as therapy and counseling, which can be socially demanding, self-care only requires only one person &#8211; yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It requires you to do a lot of self-reflection and be in tune with your emotions. Self-care means taking control of your own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019re feeling anxious, depressed, or emotionally burned out &#8211; know that you have the power to change your situation. Engaging in self-care practices helps you create a more balanced and stress-free lifestyle. It can help you lead a calmer and happier life by reducing stress, improving focus, and enhancing emotional regulation. Mindfulness and meditation practices are also known to help with cognitive ability and function.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first started practice this method, it helped me release a lot of my anxiety and find peace within myself. I realized that even if others tried to push pressure on me, it was up to me to learn if I wanted to take it all in or find ways to find solutions to avoid facing crippling anxiety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes &#8211; it took time for me to feel more self-reassurance. With practice, I realized that I am my own biggest support system which is why I needed to conserve energy on protecting my peace &#8211; not letting others take control of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here are some simple mindfulness and meditation techniques:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deep breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guided meditation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mindfulness apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nature walks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Journaling for Emotional Release<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Journaling is one of the best ways to sort out your emotions and develop mental clarity. There are a variety of things you can journal about such as your observations, experiences, challenges, emotions, or random thoughts you have throughout the day. There are no rules! Simply write what you feel.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I started journaling as a way to feel give a sense of structure to my life. I felt that I always juggled numerous tasks at once. Once I started learning to write it down and prioritizing things, everything became more manageable and digestible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here are some prompts for self-reflection:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;<em>&#8220;What am I grateful for today?&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<em>&#8220;How am I feeling?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhat did I learn today?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWas I kind to myself today?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhere do I find inspiration?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhat do I want to achieve?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Set Healthy Boundaries<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I can\u2019t overestimate the importance of setting healthy boundaries with people. If you\u2019re like me and are a non-confrontational person, setting boundaries can feel difficult and awkward. But that\u2019s something you must try your best to overcome. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Getting more comfortable with saying no will save you from great amounts of emotional exhaustion and make your life easier. Remember, you don\u2019t have to do anything you\u2019re not comfortable with and shouldn\u2019t feel guilty for not wanting to!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of those self-care tips for mental health that I strongly encourage everyone to practice. I had to learn this throughout various forms of relationships I built with the people closest in my life. Being tired and barely functioning all day also leads to a severe lack of productivity, which can affect your mood and sense of accomplishment. Not to mention the many chronic health problems it may lead to such as high blood pressure and kidney disease.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember that I used to sleep with my thoughts because I kept replaying the same scenarios over and over again. It was endless. What helped me got over it was by setting the tone for my night by removing distractions and finding wind-down activities that would distract me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here are some sleep hygiene tips:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep a consistent bed-time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a wind-down routine that is screen-free<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice relaxation techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read a book before bed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exercise for Mental Wellness<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keeping your body active is one of the best things you can do for mental wellness. Research has shown that people who exercise regularly have considerably lower rates of mental illness. Exercising improves mood, reduces stress hormones, boosts self-esteem, sleep and helps you feel more alert and rejuvenated throughout the day.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I can tell you right now that exercise was not something that I&#8217;ve always loved. However &#8211; it&#8217;s important that I tried my best to fit in small sessions of workout when I can by making time for it. It not only made me feel better about myself, but it helped me set a more positive tone throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here are some easy ways to incorporate physical activity:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yoga<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dancing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online exercise videos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Healthy Nutrition for Mental Clarity<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The food we eat has a direct effect on how we feel. Having a balanced diet gives your mind and body the nourishment they need to stay energized and healthy. Eating healthy and drinking water can improve your mental state by improving brain function, boosting mood, and supporting gut health. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as I am a workaholic, hunger takes over quickly and cooking myself a meal is usually the last thing I want to do after a long day. I realized that meal-prepping was something I haven&#8217;t tried out before and once I started, it was life changing.
