“Success would make me more happy. If only I had more money for that to happen.”
Most people may consider financial gain to lead to success, but sometimes, having money isn’t necessarily going to fill that hunger for satisfaction in your life.
You may be wondering how to find success and what it looks like, which is why I have come prepared with a this article: Identifying and Planning to Achieve Personal Goals: A Guide to Success – just for you.
Trust me – I once believed it too when my days felt like nothing more than the same schedule everyday.
However, with time, I’ve learned that one of the secrets to success is setting your goals every single day. Many successful entrepreneurs plus celebrities share this habit.
But I’ll be honest – not everyone knows how to pick the right goals including me sometimes.
In this article I’ll share with you my method on how to achieve success in your life as I did with mines. Let’s start!
1. Why Having Personal Goals Matters
W. Clement Stone once said, “Determining your purpose is the beginning of all achievements,” and that couldn’t be more accurate. In life, if we want to achieve something, whether it’s acing an exam, earning a scholarship, or landing a dream job, we need to set our own personal goals.
With clear and specific goals, I’ve found it’s easier to stay motivated and track my progress. Setting goals has helped me:
- Figure out what’s really important and focus my energy on that.
- Manage my time more effectively and use my resources wisely.
- Broaden my horizons and build a deeper understanding of what I’m working toward.
- Stay optimistic and ready to tackle challenges head-on.
- Track my progress and appreciate my growth, which encourages me to aim even higher.
With that being said, you may be wondering “What steps should I take to also reach my goals?”
I’m here to tell you that there is no simple formula that would work for everyone, however – there is some tricks I’ve used that I believe would be beneficial for anyone who wants to obtain their versions of success. Keep on reading to find out!

2. How I Set and Achieve My Goals
Let’s be real—setting goals is just the beginning. The real challenge is creating a roadmap to make those goals happen.
One of the most important things to note is that roadmaps for each individual will not look the same as the next person’s– and that’s perfectly normal. Everyone has their own goals and limitations and personal lives, which makes each person’s roadmap unique to them.
The way to determine what you really want can be broken down into some short criteria’s that I will be sharing in this upcoming section of this article: Identifying And Planning to Achieve Personal Goals: A Guide to Success.
Here’s what I’ve learned works best for me:
2.1. Determine What You Really Want

Before jumping into action, it’s important to take a step back and ask yourself what you truly want in life. In this article that helps young individuals in their 20s to navigate present and their future lives, it also can help anyone else who is trying to plan their roadmap because it touches on 5 key components that affects all of us in this modern age:
- Education: What do I want to study? What skills do I want to develop?
- Career: What kind of job do I want? How do I see my career evolving in the next 3-5 years?
- Family: What kind of family life do I envision?
- Health: How do I want to feel and look physically? Are there any sports or fitness activities I want to master?
- Finances: How much do I want to save or invest? Do I want to explore business ventures?
A quick trick I use is the “three goals method.” In less than 30 seconds, I write down the three most important things I want to achieve in life. It’s a great way to get clear on what I value most.
If you take someone in their 20s -for example- you will notice certain trends that reflect long term goals that they are trying to set up for themselves, such as obtaining a stable job with good financial income in a field that really does interest them. This is also backed up by self written journals, such as this one, that heightens the importance of individuals’ sense of priority for health and having a backbone for their work – education.
You may be wondering, “Well what are short-term and long-term goals that I should prioritize in my own life?”
To answer this question, we must understand what short-term and long-term goals mean. Let’s get into it in the next section of Identifying and Planning to Achieve Personal Goals: A Guide to Success – Set Short-Term and Long-Term Goals.
2.2. Set Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

Once I know what I want, I break down my goals into short-term and long-term categories.
According to a BoardAffect article, short-term goals are defined by their their smaller successes that can add up eventually to a bigger end goal.
For long-term goals, they are generally defined by how resilient it can make an individual and how well you can keep up the same schedule over a longer duration of time in comparison to short-term goals.
For example, my long-term goal might be to become a doctor, but first, I need to crush the entrance exams, complete my studies, and get through residency. By setting short-term goals like daily tasks or weekly objectives, I make steady progress toward those bigger, long-term dreams.
Creating clear and actionable goals is crucial for personal success.
Whether you’re focusing on short-term wins or long-term aspirations, having a structured approach can make all the difference.

Now let’s discuss how you can take action and how you can set yourself up for success.
2.3. Take Action
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” and that couldn’t be truer when it comes to achieving goals. I start by listing out all the things I need to do, then prioritize them:
- Sequence: What’s the first thing I need to do before I can move forward?
- Priority: What’s most important right now? What can wait?
If we were to give examples to each of these smaller subsections, we think about how we can ‘declutter’ our mind and space to allow us to move forward and take the first step to achieve our goals. For me, this really meant figuring out ways to get my children to be busy while their mom gets to start putting herself first.
Now, shifting gears over to learning to how prioritize, it can look different from one person to another – simply because we live on different schedules and have different needs. For myself, I would say that I had to learn how to prioritize my own well-being first because I automatically am used to putting my children first all the time.
Really sit with yourself in a calm manner and get out a pen and paper to help you decide what your order of procedures and where you think your priorities lie best.
Onto the next section of Identifying and Planning to Achieve Personal Goals: A Guide to Success, let’s discuss the importance of identifying obstacles and how to veer around them.
2.4. Identify Obstacles

One thing I’ve learned is that obstacles are inevitable. According to the 80/20 rule, 20% of our struggles come from external factors, but 80% come from within—things like lacking a specific skill or knowledge. So, I focus on improving my weaknesses while still honing my strengths.
When people think of weaknesses, they usually think about it as things that they are not good at. Instead, I encourage you to look at your ‘weaknesses’ as areas that not only could use more practice and improvement, but areas that have the most opportunity for growth.
I find that what helps me achieve my personal goals the most is to view things in my life more optimistically. It is life-changing to know that once you are a bit more kind and gentler with yourself, you are more inclined to keep pushing forward instead of feeling dejected.
Outside of changing your perspective on how you view different aspects of your life, let’s turn the page to now consider the importance of how to set up a deadline for yourself.
2.5. Set a Deadline
From day one, I set deadlines for myself. If the goal is huge, I break it into smaller tasks with their own sub-deadlines. Meeting those deadlines keeps me accountable and helps me measure my progress.
Similar to how we previously talked about having sequences and priorities, setting deadlines helps us to stay accountable, on track, and even motivate us to keep trying on the days were we simply feel like we don’t want to.
Those days will hit harder than anything else, which is why deadlines serve as strong testing points to test our ambition to see if we really want to reach our goals or not.
Outside of all of those traits mentioned, the other important aspect of setting deadlines can be that it builds discipline. Doesn’t that sound fantastic?
2.6. Build Discipline

I’ve found that discipline is key to achieving goals. Once I decide what’s most important, I make it a point to avoid distractions and focus 100% on getting that task done.
When we think of examples of discipline, the first one that comes to my mind includes the military. Those people deployed are seen to wake up at the same time, see the same schedules, the same meals, and wear the same clothes.
For the majority of us, we can sense that if we tried that routine out, it would drive us crazy.
Why? Because we crave change.
Take a moment, sit back, and I encourage you to think why some people voluntarily want to stay in service if most of their days and meals look the same.
Have you figured out the answer yet?
According to a Pew Research Center article, 60% Americans who served claim their experience was a positive effect because it served them in long-term health and financial benefits. Their long-term commitment helps to provide accountability for their hard work, which in turn, helps them to level up in ranks and unlock other missions and privileges.
With all that being said, accountability can lead to success which also drives another question: What do I do once I reach my goal?
2.7. Reassess Your Goals

Once I achieve a goal, I reassess. If it was too easy, I raise the bar for the next one. If it was a challenge, I evaluate what I can improve. And if a goal no longer excites me, I give myself permission to shift my focus.
